Connections

These diary-like drawings hint at presence and connections, aloneness and relationships. My tools and means are modest: raw canvas, drawing pens and markers, walnut and india inks, wax and conte crayons. Their size is intimate, requiring close viewing.

I draw things I have found; that I pick up, want to hold in my hands, that I cherish in some way. A bit of water softened tree bark or rusted metal, an animal tooth or a small doll - any of these might be the beginning of a drawing. I follow an inner sense when I work. I don't know where it will lead. I am always surprised.

"The voice we all hear when we listen as far back as memory reaches, on the very limits of memory, beyond memory perhaps, in the field of the immemorial.

All we communicate to others is an orientation toward what is secret without ever being able to tell the secret objectively."

Gaston Bachelard
