Navigation 3D

In this work I explore new territory, inspired by a simple but compelling dream. In the dream I am in a one-person boat, perhaps an inflatable kayak, in a narrow canal like the C&O canal in DC. I have set off on a short journey: my destination is unclear. At first the water moves me along, but soon, to my horror I find I have no paddles, no oars!! I use my hands to propel the boat through the shallow, muddy, rocky parts. I get stuck. I get out and pull the kayak along. I keep going.

I want to explore my dream. I see it as a gift from my unconscious. I draw. I attach some flat shapes to canvas. I start to build. I make things out of wire mesh, canvas, cheesecloth, encaustic, and rusty metal. I layer chiffon, with images of my ancestors on it. I "draw" with wire and attach things with adhesives and pins. I am in unknown territory.

These pieces are intimately scaled, fragile, often delicate. They suggest light and movement, boats and oars, animals and wings.
